It does show the boot log or whatever at startup, but then doesn't show anything else and the booting is all red and blurry/choppy.

Shit. I think my system with the new graphics card is set to run on a different resolution than that of my TV. Is there any way I can do this without plugging the machine via DVI into another monitor and changing the resolution for the HDMI connection?

bios is the black screen you see the instant you turn your computer on, before windows starts to load, flashing your bios is risky, but can fix odd problems

Start off with downloading your motherboard drivers, google the manufacturer/go to their website and find the right model and look for the downloads section. Then do the same for graphics ans stuff
